our history

Shuswap Lake Haven Llama & Alpaca Farm is owned and operated by the McManus family now proudly entering its third generation. Located on the shores of Shuswap Lake in north-central British Columbia, Canada, our family has called this beautiful land home since the mid-1950s.

Our farm is situated on the southeast arm of Shuswap Lake, one of British Columbia's largest and most popular lakes. With four long arms forming its distinctive "H" shape and more than 1,600 km of shoreline, Shuswap Lake is renowned for its clear water, warm summers, mild winters, and stunning views of the Monashee Mountains, making it a year-round recreation and tourist destination.

Long before our family settled here, the property was a thriving apple orchard. In those days there were no roads leading to the farm, and produce was taken out by boat in the summer and across the frozen lake in winter. After our family settled here, we raised cattle for many years (grew tired of fixing fences) before discovering a passion for llamas and alpacas in the early 1990s—a passion that continues to shape our farm today.

The word "Haven" in our name pays tribute to the farms unique history, and one of the lands original occupants. Long before our family arrived, there was a retired gentleman who lived here in a small log cabin - one of only two residences on the farm - while his female friend and landowner occupied the other close by. This was at least the story that was maintained, as it was after all a time when unmarried relationships were best kept to some discretion. Either way, he called his home "The Haven", and it is a name that we still feel perfectly suits the place we call home today.

We believe there is no better place to raise these remarkable animals. The cooling breezes from Shuswap Lake help keep them comfortable throughout the summer, while their natural adaptation to the high-altitude climates of South America makes British Columbia's winters easy to handle. Our peaceful lakeside setting also provides the perfect environment for visitors to meet and interact with the animals—something our curious llamas and alpacas seem to enjoy just as much as our guests do.

Today, Shuswap Lake Haven Llamas & Alpaca Farm is a place where family history, farming, and a love of animals come together. We are proud to share our unique corner of British Columbia with everyone who visits and hope you experience the same.
